I think it started with Google Voice (I think the icon was a light blue phone?), then merged into Hangouts, and then back again to Google Voice (now a green phone icon).

I would get visual transcripts of all my voicemails when looking at the (at the time) Hangouts app.

I don't remember exactly what settings I had, but essentially when someone would call my normal cellphone number, after x rings it would forward to my Google Voice's number and go to voicemail. Ever since I've owned the OG pixel phone, I've used Google Voice service to act as my voicemail.
